Historical and Ethnographic Expedition "Paths of Great Achievements

From January 15 to 28, 2018 there was a large-scale expedition "Pathways of Great Achievements" to the most inaccessible settlements of Khabarovsk region in Tuguro-Chumikan district village. Udskoye, Chumikan village.
The expedition was organized by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) to the Far Eastern Federal District together with the Neryungri District Municipal Entity, Khabarovsk Territory Museum named after N.I. Grodekov. N.I. Grodekov, the Khabarovsk and Yakutsk branches of the Russian Geographical Society and the Public Assembly of Peoples of the Khabarovsk Territory. For the first time, a group of scientists, local historians, documentary filmmakers and public figures covered a distance of 3,800 km, of which 1,800 km were driven along the route Khabarovsk - Udskoye - Chumikan on the winter road.
The aim of the expedition was a comprehensive historical and ethnographic study of the history and traditional culture of the population of the Tuguro-Chumikanskiy district of Khabarovsk Krai. In the history of our country this territory was one of the most important centers on the Pacific borders. By the end of the XVII-beginning of the XVIII centuries the Ud. Udsky burg was the main stronghold of the territories lying to the south of Okhotsk to the Lower Amur basin. Udsky Ostrog up to the middle of XIX century had a status of frontier settlement and was of great strategic importance for defense of borders of Russian Empire. Nowadays there is an urgent need in preserving of historical and cultural heritage. From this point of view, the expedition became relevant and contributed to the task of preserving, promoting and transmitting to the younger generation whole knowledge about the amazing history of the region and the distinctive culture of the peoples inhabiting it.
During the trip, we met with local residents, interviewed elders; collected data in the district, village and museum archives; collected information about the history and population of the village. Udskoye, Algazeya, and Torom villages. Torom, s. Chumikan in Tuguro-Chumikansky Raion, Khabarovsk Krai; interviewed representatives of the local administration, heads of public organizations, and local intellectuals; interviewed cultural workers and craftsmen; and collected photo, video, and audio materials. An important event was a visit to the site of the Udsky Ostrog.
