Annual expedition trips to the Bureinsky State Nature Reserve

Senior Researcher of the Nature Department, E.V. Novomodny is an entomologist: over 45 years he has been studying fauna and ecology of bacilliform moths in Khabarovsk Krai, collects collections, and published 11 scientific articles on this topic.

The purpose of annual expedition trips to the Bureinsky Reserve: continuous monitoring of populations of northern species of butterflies, which have survived in the Amur region since the last ice age due to the high altitude climate, have been virtually unaffected by industrial activities and are actually more available for research in the reserve than in the northern regions of Khabarovsk Krai.

The program is implemented on the basis of the Agreement on scientific cooperation between the Khabarovsk Krai Museum named after N.I. Grodekov and the Bureinsky State Nature Reserve, concluded for 2017-2022. The reserve provides its territory for research works, accepts and supports scientists from the KhKM: provides transportation, accommodation in the forest cordons and security. The employees of the museum are required to observe the reserve regime, to conduct research without damaging the ecosystems of the reserve, to provide timely information reports on the results obtained and the materials of scientific publications made on their basis. Since 2010, the work has been conducted jointly with Candidate of Biological Sciences E.S. Koshkin (nowadays assistant researcher of the reserve, and in 2005-2010, researcher of the Khanty-Mansiysk Historical Archives named after N.K. Ammosov). - From 2005 to 2010 he was an employee of the N.I. Grodekov State Museum of Fine Arts). The contract in no small measure allows us to save on the costs of organizing expeditions.

Timing and routes. Usually it is mid- to late June to mid-July, 15-25 days, depending on the time of summer in the mountains (the snow takes a long time to melt). To study late summer fauna in 2017 worked from July 13 to August 1. We enter the territory of the reserve on wheeled and tracked all-terrain vehicles. We are based at the cordons and wintering grounds "Niman", "Novoye Medvezhye", "Pravaya Bureya River Control Point", "Buginskoye", located on an abandoned road (built in 1915-1917) at an altitude of 900-1100 m at a distance of 10-18 km from each other. From time to time we make one- or multi-day exits to the mountains up to 1700-1800 m or to other unexplored places with overnight stays in tents.

Current results. As a result of our expeditions, the fauna of club-headed moths is the most fully revealed among all the insects inhabiting the Reserve: more than 100 species, while according to collections of 1977-1978 there were only 45 of them. Their habitats unknown to science and even new species not yet described by scientists have been found. In the future it is necessary both to increase the number of studied systematic groups of arthropods (biodiversity), and to carry out works in the southern part of the reserve (on the Levaya Bureya River), where there are no roads, except animal trails, and movement with cargo is possible only on rivers by boat.
