Volochayev Days" exhibition
Volochayev Days" exhibition
For the centenary of the end of the Civil War in Russia, the Grodekovo Museum presents the exhibition "Volochayev Days". The exhibition is dedicated to the Battle of Volochayev on February 10-12, 1922, which was one of the decisive battles of the Russian Civil War. As a result of the defeat of the White Guards' campaign in Khabarovsk, Japan withdrew its troops from the Primorye Territory, and the intervention ended. The White Guards, together with their families, went into exile in Korea and China. In November 1922 the DVR became part of the RSFSR and the Russian Civil War ended.
The exhibition features items from the collection of the Grodekovo Museum, the Central Museum of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (Moscow), the V. K. Arsenyev Museum of Far Eastern History (Vladivostok), the N. D. Tomin Local History Museum (Kurtamish, Kurgan region), and the Khabarovsk regional branch of the Search movement of Russia.
The Volochayev battle vividly revealed the fratricidal nature of the Civil War. Countrymen, former fellow-soldiers, divided by political and ideological views, fought against each other. After the battle, the local peasants, not caring whether the dead belonged to different sides, buried them in mass graves. The harsh winter conditions and lack of supplies forced the participants of the battle on both sides to additionally use warm shawls, Cossack and peasant fur hats, cloaks, etc. In the photographs both the NRA fighters and the White Army fighters look almost identically dressed, often no insignia (epaulets, stripes, etc.) can be seen. Both sides used the same types of weapons. It is no less symbolic that a resident of Volochayevka village made a pot from a shell casing of a large-caliber shell and then used it for exclusively peaceful purposes. Thus, the unnatural state of war and the things that reminded us of it were as if leveled by the natural course of life.
The exhibition was prepared with the financial support of the History of the Fatherland Foundation.
