SEA SYMPHONY

An exhibition of collections of marine life from the World Ocean and items inlaid with mother-of-pearl from the collection of the Grodekovsky Museum and a private collection
A sea symphony is a melody that comes to life on the shore as the waves gently touch the sand. Each shell holds stories of the deep sea, whispering of adventures and mysteries.
Behind every beautiful souvenir from the sea—a shell—lies a fascinating story. It's not just a decoration, but the former home of a mollusk that was once part of ocean, river, and even land life.
Mollusks, as one of the most diverse groups of animals, have a profound impact on marine ecosystems and our lives. Bivalves are especially important: they act as natural filters, purifying water of pollutants. Furthermore, their role in rock formation is enormous – after death, they form thick layers of limestone on the seafloor.
Mollusk shells are the result of half a billion years of evolution and adaptation to diverse conditions. Since the emergence of these organisms, they have continually evolved, and this is reflected in the structure of their protective "homes." Made from calcium extracted from the water, the shells are formed by the layered accumulation of minerals and organic matter, acquiring strength and a surprising variety of shapes: spiral, fan-shaped, tubular, and even flower-like. Not only does this protect the mollusk from predators and help it stay afloat, but it also serves as a refuge for other marine life, such as hermit crabs.
Rounded and horned, mother-of-pearl and porcelain-like, miniature and gigantic, mollusk shells embody natural beauty and purposefulness for us. In the shape of their coils, scientists have long sought a parallel with the structure of the universe, mathematical patterns common to all living things, and perfect rules of architecture.
Mollusks have had a significant impact on the development of human civilization, with their shells being as important as stone axes. For centuries, shells have inspired humanity, finding use in jewelry, art, and even as currency.
The diversity of shell shapes, textures, and colors will capture your imagination and leave you in awe of nature's artistry. Educational fossil exhibits will immerse you in the world of dinosaurs, ancient sea creatures, and other amazing creatures that once inhabited our planet.
Ocean, sea, and aquarium enthusiasts will discover a true treasure at the shell exhibit. The display offers a truly captivating glimpse into the diversity of marine life, reflected in the exquisite shapes and textures of shells. You'll learn which shells were used as money and which are used to grow pearls.
The exhibition features items from the collections of the Khabarovsk Regional Museum named after N.I. Grodekov and private collections.
The secrets of the sea depths are revealed to those who listen carefully. Exploring them, we find inspiration in simple things, immersing ourselves in the world of shells, where each shape is unique and the colors are breathtaking.
