Excursion "Activities of the Priamur Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society"

The year 2023 marks the 180th anniversary of Nikolai Ivanovich Grodekov's birth. He was a brilliant administrator of the Far East in the late 19th - early 20th centuries, from 1898 to 1902 he held the position of Priamur Governor-General and commander of the troops of the Priamur Military District. He also initiated the establishment of the Priamursky department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society and became its first chairman. He entered the cultural history of the region as the founder of the Museum of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society (now the Grodekovsky Museum), scientist, philanthropist, collector and donor.

During the excursion "Activities of the Priamursky Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society" you will visit the exhibition "Grodekov: Time and Place" and the permanent exposition "History of Russian exploration of Priamurye", which presents items from the museum collection that belonged to Nikolai Ivanovich. During the excursion the guide will tell you about the expeditions to explore the Amur region and their importance, about Grodekov's contribution to the formation and development of the geographical society in Khabarovsk, the creation of the library, the museum and the formation of its collections.
